Hemiplegic Migraine

Hemiplegic Migraine (HM) are migraine attacks, a neurological disorder that is episodic in nature. Some symptoms include episodes of prolonged aura (up to several days or weeks), Hemiplegia (paralysis on one side of the body), fever, Meningismus (symptoms of meningitis without the actual illness and inflammation), impaired consciousness ranging from confusion or profound coma, headache, ataxia or defective muscle coordination, nausea or vomiting, phonophobia or photophobia.
Those who experience HM absolutely need to educate themselves about their disease and treatment. Because many doctors have never treated HM, it is imperative to seek a Migraine specialist for care and follow-up.

Not So Sweet Dreams

My daughter and I were cleaning out her room earlier today, removing old winter clothes and unpacking the summer shorts and shirts. It’s so nice to finally be able to do that. The weather has just been great and my body is just loving the vitamin D.
I was hoping to be rewarded with enjoying the sun later on that day. But course, things never turn out the way you want them to. My head was getting that same irritating feeling of fogginess and fullness I feel when I start getting a migraine. The damn thing can be so inconvenient! But such is life I guess.

So I take a nap, even though I know I’ll be feeling not-so-good later on, but my body’s getting tired, so I do what it tells me. I get in less trouble that way.

The weirdest thing though, and this has happened to me a few times, but when I start to get sick I have really funky dreams. Sometimes I remember and sometimes I don’t. This time, I thought I’d write it down. I’m not into dream interpretation but I can probably relate to how scary it can be if one’s dreams do come true. How one would go about interpreting certain parts of this dream  I have no idea. And I swear to you, there was no illicit drug use prior to the making of this dream. There was a diuretic taken, however, a chronic medication I take, which could account for the water scene and near fatal drowning incident. Oh, and I took my trusty Aleeve, but I doubt this had any sort of hallucinogenic effects.  I’d be pretty happy all the time if that was the case.

But let me start from the beginning…

I was in our neighborhood and it was an overcast day (again, possibly the diuretic effect). In my dream we wanted to sell our house. We noticed that our neighbors had sold their house and they were bragging to everyone about how it sold only after a day in the market. I was quiet upset. So I had my daughter sneak over to their yard and steal their “magic” for sale sign. We placed it on our yard and low and behold interested buyers were marching up our yard. My family was outside to greet them, everyone was smiling and in a celebratory mood, all in anticipation of all the moolah we were going be making.

All of a sudden poisonous darts started to fly everywhere.
The only person that was hit was me, and, quite curiously, the dart stabbed me on my left side.
I was screaming at my family and everyone on my yard.
“Get down on the ground!” I yelled.
At that moment I felt really tough, like, I was planning to save everyone. Very Sara Connor-ish , you know a really brawny kinda gal like Ripley only with a limp.

Now, how weird it that, right? As most of you know when I get my episodes, my left side goes. Before the nap I was feeling something coming on. It just seems interesting to me that it manifests itself into my dreams.

So to continue…
The next scene is where my family and I are in the deep ocean waters in some sort of  submarine.  But our underwater ship was filling with water and I had to get my family out. My left side was pretty much useless, yet I persevered to save my family.
I got my two boys out and swam them up to the surface where a boat was conveniently waiting. Bella however was battling a giant Jellyfish. So, even though I was completely fatigued , I swam down to save her. I tore Bella from the Giant Jellyfish’s clutches and whisked her away to the surface to be joined by her two brothers.

I placed her on the boat. I floated away, and I drowned.  OK, so that part of the dream didn’t turn out too well. And yes, I lied earlier when I said ‘near-fatal accident’. But who’d want to read a story where the main character dies?

Scene three was more charming and uplifting. Think Sound of Music.

I was back in my house (you know, the one that never got sold because of the flying poisonous darts) and I was sitting on a chair looking rather old and decrepit. Wow, did I look depressing, I even felt depressed in my sleep. I looked like an old Asian woman in mourning. Black shawl, black dress, black shoes, black laced head cover. My hair was white and I was bent over in a chair, frail and despondent. My expression was sad and I was all alone. Deep wrinkles covered my once youthful face.

How much more dismal and gloomy can you get! But stay with me…

So, in this dream, my house was close to a hill and from the distance I see a group of people walking towards me. As they come closer, I see that they are my family, all dressed up for some sort of special occasion. Standing next to my family is me, wearing a glamorous navy blue, form-fitted, sequenced evening gown, with beautiful matching to-die-for shoes.  My hair was elegantly arranged, my makeup was pristine, and I had absolutely no limp. I’m looking pretty smooth.

My ‘old’ self recognized that the woman approaching was me and... POOF! My old-depressing-lady-self disappeared. I was left with the energy and vitality of this woman that had replaced her.
All was well with the world and I awoke from the nap completely exhausted. And no, it was not because the dream took a lot out of me. I just get really fatigued with my episodes and I can sleep like the dead.

So I wake up, left side feeling numb and droopy.  Mr. Cane awaits. But like the dream, I will turn into that glamorous woman in a couple of days with the sequenced, form-fitting, evening gown with to-die-for-shoes. Well, at least, a more realistic version of it.

Hmmm, I think I’ll be me making a spa appointment soon!
